What Are Dreams Made Of

China L’One started her journey as a DJ in 2000. She found herself accidentally DJing at a friend’s birthday party because her friend was unhappy with the DJ she had hired. China mustered up the courage, approached the DJ and asks if he could teach her how to use the desks. “I loved it, but what’s even more important is that people loved the music I was playing! We danced the night away.” China L’One never looked back.

China started pursuing DJing by organizing events at her local youth center called Chill Out Spot. She then started her own talent night at her local Baptist church. She promoted the talent night all over London and in The Voice newspaper. China L’One’s talent night was a huge success with young people from all parts of the city attending the event.

She also volunteered participating in DJ workshops at different youth centers including Pollards Hill Youth Centre, Kingston Youth Centre, and Searchlight Youth Centre in New Malden.

“For me, DJing isn’t just a job, it’s an art, it’s a way to touch lives.” In 2001, China approached the Prince’s Trust organization for funding to start her own business called Raw Talent Club. This was a members-only club geared towards boys and girls under 18 skillful in singing, dancing, MCing, drama, and DJing, who lacked the confidence to showcase their talent.

In 2003, China applied and was admitted to a full-time university to study BA in Media Arts and Music Technology.

Whilst at university, she kept honing her craft by regularly performing in West London clubs. After receiving her BA degree, she started organizing events for all ages, including Soul 2 Soul Sundays, Its a Friday Thing and Black History Month.

In 2012, China set up another business to promote the uniqueness and individuality of female DJs called We Run the World Female DJ Agency Ltd. The same year she also pre-launched her own clothing line and self-published the You Are What You Think e-book – a book about the importance of confidence and of going after your dreams.

China has wowed crowds in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Ibiza, Italy, India and on the Fantasy and Magic luxury cruise ships. .

China L’One is also the choice of top brands in the UK when they need a DJ for promotional events – including H&M, Fossil, Warehouse Clothing Store and New Look. She played for the Topshop review during London Fashion Week 2015.

“What are dreams made of? Hard work, bravery and a little bit of luck.”

Nothing But Bright Skies Ahead
China’s ambition is to continue with her passion as a DJ, whilst focusing on We Run the World Female DJ Agency Ltd finding employment for female DJs around the world.

The industry is still dominated by men, but this is slowly changing and it’s exciting for me to be part of this process. Women can be amazing entertainers and it’s important that they get a chance to perform and to win the crowd.”
