I would like to shed some light on the injustices that a Female DJ faces as compared to their male counterparts. When I started DJing in the 2000s there were not many Female DJs at the time and it was very hard for Female DJs to get bookings. Many Male DJs, in general, will speak about the lack of skills of female DJs but it always seemed to me that they were just scared of the competition.
But as times goes by, people are beginning to recognize the talent of Female DJs and we are beginning to get more and more gigs. But not all talented Female DJs are getting these gigs.
Whilst Male DJs are booked based on talent alone, Female DJs are booked more on how they look. A female DJ has got to look glamorous, working with a well know brand or Radio Station to get a gig.
I have come across a number of Male DJs who are very simple in appearance, some with bellies bigger than Winnie the Pooh, but never the less, are able to DJ all over the world with their looks not becoming a factor.
But for Female DJs, this is not the case. Firstly we do not get paid as much as Male DJs and we are forced to pay a lot of attention on our appearance. I am not taking about TOPLESS Female DJs, I am taking about Female DJs in generals.
It is becoming so bad now that most female DJs are beginning to sell themselves based on their look alone and not their talent, like Male DJs.
As female DJs, we just only to be able to get gigs to pay for our bills, just like male DJs. But instead, with what little money we do manage to make, we are asked to buy heels and fancy clothing to help us get DJ Bookings, which is very unfair on us.
Some Female DJs are fortunate that they do not have to look like a model or very glamorous to get a gig because they know well known Male DJs in the business who help them out. But what happens to the other Female DJs who don’t know anyone in the business but are equally talented.
I have also been told that some of these DJs get top Male DJs to record their mix for them to get booking. So that they can just focus on their looks and sometimes play recorded mixes at live shows.
Another thing which really upsets me is why do Female DJs have to be a brand to get a DJ bookings? When I look around me I see so many Male DJs working who are not branded so why can’t that be the case for Female DJs as well?
As an owner of a Female DJ company, I have come across so many instances of inequality which apply not only to gender, but to race as well. I get clients telling me that they only want White DJs with others telling me that they only want model built Female DJs.
The only way society can change this is to deliberately book a Female DJ based on talent alone. That is what we are all fighting for as Female DJs!
Thanks for your support,, please share this blog, get families and friends to be more aware of the situation, hopefully it may help FEMALE DJS!
